This Monster Wants to Eat Me episode 13 review

In episode 13, Hinako, Shiori, and Miko go on a trip to Dogo Onsen. They take photos and browse souvenirs together. At a souvenir shop, Hinako is looking at hairpins. Shiori asks if she would like her to buy one for her and holds it up to Hinako’s hair. However, Hinako takes the hairpin from Shiori’s hand, holds it up to Shiori’s hair instead, and says, “It suits you better, Shiori.” This moment clearly links back to the shell exchange between Hinako and Shiori when they first met.

Later that night at the inn, thanks to Miko’s consideration, Hinako and Shiori go out together to buy ice cream. On their way back, Shiori asks Hinako, “Did you have fun today?”
Because of a childhood accident that occurred during her first family trip, Hinako has long disliked traveling and believed that she was not allowed to enjoy it. However, she tells Shiori that she was able to feel at least a little bit of enjoyment this time.

During their conversation, Shiori takes out the hairpin Hinako had been holding at the souvenir shop and gently places it in Hinako’s hair. Shiori then explains why she renewed her promise to eat Hinako.

After that, there is a scene of Hinako going to school. She is wearing the hairpin Shiori gave her. Facing a family photograph, she says “I’m off” in a slightly brighter voice.

Episode 13 Thoughts & Analysis

In episode 12, there was a scene showing an exchange of seashells between Hinako and Shiori during their childhood. The interaction between Hinako and Shiori in episode 13 clearly echoes that moment, making it especially memorable. The seashell scene can also be found in volume 6 of the manga.

Episode 13 includes a scene where Hinako and Shiori go out at night to buy ice cream together. In many Western countries, due to safety concerns, it would be unthinkable for two high school girls to go out alone at night. While it is not necessarily encouraged in Japan either, it often does not cause problems in busy or well-populated areas. This scene highlights the relatively high level of public safety in Japan.

The setting of episode 13 is around Dogo Onsen Station in Ehime Prefecture, Japan. The same locations visited by the three characters actually exist in real life. During their sightseeing, there is a scene where the three of them soak only their feet in hot water. In Japan, there is a cultural practice known as a hot spring foot bath, where people soak just their feet instead of bathing fully. Dogo Onsen has several free public hot spring foot bath spots. If you ever visit Dogo Onsen in person, I highly recommend trying one—just be sure to bring a towel with you.

The manga is still ongoing, and its ending differs from the anime’s conclusion. I encourage you to enjoy This Monster Wants to Eat Me by comparing both the anime and the manga.
